Fullstack Engineer (Contract) – LLM-Powered Chatbot Integration
Job Description
Posted on: May 1, 2025
Role Overview
We are looking for a Contract Fullstack Engineer (Backend-Focused) to lead the integration of an AI “co-pilot” chatbot (powered by a large language model) into the our healthcare platform. In this role, you will assess and select a suitable HIPAA-compliant LLM provider (e.g. Hathr.ai, Claude, or similar) and build a chatbot interface that seamlessly integrates with our existing web and mobile apps. You’ll use context from user interactions to enable the LLM to provide helpful, validated responses.
This is a remote-first position for approximately 3 months (contract), with the possibility of follow-on work if the MVP is successful.
Responsibilities
- LLM Provider Evaluation: Assess and recommend appropriate LLM provider(s) that meet our requirements (HIPAA compliance, performance, cost), such as Hathr.ai (Claude) or other comparable models.
- Chatbot Development: Design and implement the co-pilot chatbot interface and backend logic within the our clients' platform. This includes creating the necessary backend services to handle chat interactions and integrating them into our ReactJS (web) and React Native (mobile) applications.
- Contextual AI Queries: Leverage context from user threads and expert input to formulate queries to the LLM. Ensure the AI’s responses are context-aware, validating user queries and cross-checking references (e.g. verifying procedure details or pulling in documentation from verified suppliers) to provide accurate, relevant information.
- Azure Integration: Utilize Microsoft Azure services to support the chatbot. For example, use Azure Functions for serverless compute, Azure Cosmos DB for storing and retrieving context data, Azure Cognitive Search for quickly finding relevant documents or past discussions, and Azure AD B2C to ensure secure authentication/authorization for users.
- Collaboration: Work closely with our frontend team to integrate the chatbot UI and ensure a smooth user experience. This includes coordinating on API contracts, testing end-to-end functionality in the web/mobile apps, and iterating on the design of the chat interface for optimal usability.
- Deployment & Testing: Ensure the solution can be deployed smoothly in our Azure environment. Write unit and integration tests for the chatbot features, and conduct thorough debugging and QA for the MVP. Iterate based on user feedback and test results to improve the chatbot’s performance and accuracy.
Requirements
- Backend Expertise: Strong experience in backend development using C#/.NET. You should be comfortable building APIs, working with serverless functions, and integrating with databases and external services.
- Frontend Familiarity: Experience with React (web) and React Native (mobile). You don’t need to be a design expert, but you should understand front-end integration and be able to collaborate on API usage and perhaps make minor UI tweaks when necessary.
- API & LLM Integration: Proven track record of integrating third-party APIs and services. Experience with AI/LLM APIs (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, etc.) is highly desirable – you should understand how to send prompts, handle responses, and manage context/state for a conversational AI.
- HIPAA & Security: Familiarity with HIPAA compliance principles and experience working with sensitive healthcare data or other regulated data. You must be diligent about security, encryption, and privacy best practices in all aspects of development.
- Azure Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure cloud services. Specifically, knowledge of Azure Functions (or similar serverless platforms), Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Search/Cognitive Search, and Azure AD B2C will be essential to hit the ground running.
- Chatbot/AI Experience: Experience building chatbots, conversational interfaces, or “co-pilot” style assistants. This could be through custom development or using frameworks – the key is understanding how to manage context, handle conversational flow, and integrate AI logic into an application.
- Collaboration & Communication: Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in a remote environment. Strong communication skills are a must – you’ll be coordinating with frontend developers, discussing ideas with product/design, and possibly interacting with LLM provider support.
Nice-to-Have
- Healthcare Domain Knowledge: Experience in the healthcare or dental tech space, or familiarity with medical terminology and workflows. This can help in understanding user needs and validating AI responses.
- AI/ML Tools: Exposure to AI development tools and frameworks (for example, experience with prompt engineering, vector databases/embedding stores, or libraries like LangChain for managing LLM interactions). Familiarity with Azure’s AI offerings (like Azure OpenAI Service) is a plus.
- DevOps Experience: Comfort with DevOps and CI/CD pipelines, especially in an Azure environment (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, etc.). This project will move quickly, so ability to automate deployments and monitor performance (e.g. using Azure Application Insights) is beneficial.
- Fullstack Flexibility: While backend is the focus, any ability to contribute to front-end development (TypeScript/React) or UI/UX improvements is appreciated.
- Startup Mentality: Experience working on rapid prototyping or startup MVP projects. We value developers who can adapt, wear multiple hats, and thrive in a fast-paced, iterative development cycle.
