Job Summary:

BNSF Railway is one of the largest U.S. railroads, and they are seeking a Full-Stack Software Engineer to support their infrastructure and platform services. This role involves developing and operating systems that enable developers to build and deploy safely and efficiently, working with a modern internal platform that spans various environments.

Responsibilities:

• This is a full-stack infrastructure engineering role, involving backend services, APIs, and developer-facing tooling for our infrastructure and platform services

• Develop and operate Kubernetes-native systems using GitOps workflows

• Build and operate infrastructure as code, automation, and observability tools and services

• Collaborate with internal application teams to improve platform usability and feedback

• Help design and run systems that scale across data centers, edge devices, and cloud environments

Qualifications:

Required:

• Experience with IaaS, PaaS, Open NOS, Service Mesh, block/object storage, Containers, Linux, SQL, and NoSQL DBs

• Proficiency in Go and Python

• Familiarity with Kubernetes and container-based development

• Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git workflows, and DevOps practices

• Interest in open-source infrastructure and developer platforms

• Familiarity with observability stacks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)

• Experience with secure coding practices and infrastructure security principles

• Familiarity with secrets management and identity and access control

• Ability to work in cross-functional teams and communicate with stakeholders

• Experience participating in design reviews, incident retrospectives, or RFC processes

• Demonstrated ability to learn new technical concepts and to adapt to new technologies quickly

• Strong communication and collaboration skills

• Up to 5 years of experience and/or strong relevant open source/personal projects (Junior Level)

• Curiosity and drive to learn deeply about infrastructure software (Junior Level)

• 5 to 10 years of experience in infrastructure or platform engineering roles (Mid Level)

• Proven ability to independently deliver features and improvements (Mid Level)

• Experience collaborating across teams and mentoring junior engineers (Mid Level)

• Familiarity with designing scalable systems and contributing to architectural decisions (Mid Level)

Preferred:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or equivalent experience

• Engineering experience with a public IaaS company (AWS, Digital Ocean, GCP, CoreWeave, etc.)

• Experience running infrastructure platforms in production such as OpenStack, Ceph, Kubernetes, DBaaS, service mesh, and API gateways

• Experience with edge systems and hybrid environments

• Familiarity with developer tooling as a builder and/or user

• Interest in sustainable infrastructure and cost/resource awareness

• Familiarity with frameworks like React, Angular, Node.js, Spring Boot
