Senior hands-on technologist

Remote-first UK role | £55–65k | Flexible working patterns

Nightingale HQ is hiring a senior hands-on technologist to help us build useful AI products, improve how we write and run software, and make our small technical team more resilient.

We are a Wales-based, female-founder-led company building practical AI and data products. GoSmarter.ai helps metal manufacturers simplify traceability and compliance using AI and computer vision. Florence helps organisations turn AI strategy into realistic, deliverable projects.

This is a senior technical role for someone who wants to stay close to the code, make thoughtful product and engineering decisions, and help others do better work. You will be a technical peer, not a lone hero or ticket machine.

What you’ll do

You will help us build, improve, and maintain production software across our products. You will work with a small remote team to make sound technical decisions, improve delivery practices, and reduce the risk of too much technical knowledge sitting with one person.

Depending on your strengths, this could include backend, frontend, infrastructure, AI-enabled product features, developer experience, testing, documentation, architecture, automation, or technical leadership. We are not looking for one perfect person who can do everything.

What matters most

You can build and improve production software. You think clearly about trade-offs, communicate well in a remote team, learn unfamiliar tools, and care about solving real customer problems.

You do not need a computer science degree, a traditional career path, or experience with our exact stack. We welcome different routes into tech. What matters is your judgement, evidence of learning, collaboration, and the quality of your work.

You will probably enjoy this role if you:

  • Have strong hands-on experience in at least one technical area, with enough breadth to work across the stack
  • Care about clean code, testing, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, automation, documentation, and thoughtful use of AI tools
  • Want to understand the real problem before building a solution
  • Make teams stronger by sharing knowledge, helping others grow, and asking good questions
  • Prefer clear priorities, lightweight process, and respectful technical challenge
  • Want to work in a flatter environment where your judgement matters

Our current tech environment

Today, you may come across Azure, Netlify, Azure SQL Database, Supabase, containerised APIs in Azure Container Apps, .NET, Python, React, TypeScript, Hugo, Azure AI, and Zuplo. You do not need to have used this exact stack before. We share it so you understand the kind of environment you would join, not because we expect a perfect keyword match.

Working at Nightingale HQ

  • This is a remote-first UK role with minimal travel expectations. We need enough overlap with UK working hours for collaboration.
  • We are open to full-time, part-time, compressed hours, or another working pattern that fits the role. Output, connection, and communication matter more than always being online.
  • The salary range is £55–65k per year. You must already have the right to work in the UK, as we cannot sponsor visas for this role. We would ideally like someone to start before the end of the year.
  • We can provide a laptop, support a secure bring-your-own-device setup where appropriate, and provide additional hardware or accessibility-related equipment where it helps you do your best work. If home is not always the best place to work, we can cover a nearby co-working space subscription.
  • You will receive paid holiday, your birthday off, usually extra time off between Christmas and New Year, and a dedicated learning budget.

Recruitment process

We plan to run a practical, fair process:

  1. Application/CV review
  2. 30-minute introductory conversation
  3. Founder conversation
  4. Two-hour pair-programming session for final candidates
  5. Offer, ideally by the end of October

We are interested in how you think, collaborate, and approach real work. We are not trying to catch you out or test how much you already know about our current stack.

Fair hiring

We recruit on merit and aim to run a fair, accessible process. We welcome people from different backgrounds, routes into tech, working patterns, and life circumstances.

We are especially keen to hear from candidates based in Wales. This is not a requirement, and all hiring decisions will be made on merit. Growing skilled jobs in Wales is part of the positive impact we want Nightingale HQ to have.

If the application or interview process creates a barrier, please tell us what would help. This could include captions, a different video platform, questions or context in advance, extra time, breaks, written follow-up, or another adjustment. You do not need to share personal or medical details.
