Lead Software Engineer

Oliver Bernard have partnered with a multinational organisation that has built an autonomous software engineering function operating with the culture and pace of a scale-up.
Over the last few years, the engineering team has grown significantly and now consists of multiple cross-functional product squads delivering innovative digital products used at scale. They are looking for an experienced Lead Software Engineer to help shape technical strategy, mentor engineers, and remain hands-on with complex software delivery.
What You'll Be Doing
- Leading the design and development of scalable backend services and APIs.
- Setting technical direction across product teams.
- Driving architectural decisions, engineering standards, and platform improvements.
- Mentoring and line managing around 3-5 engineers while supporting their technical and career growth.
- Partnering closely with Product and Delivery teams from discovery through to production.
- Championing engineering best practices, system reliability, and continuous improvement.
Tech Environment
You'll work across a modern cloud-native ecosystem including:
- Python
- FastAPI / Flask
- TypeScript / JavaScript
- React / Angular
- PostgreSQL
- Docker & Kubernetes
- Public Cloud (AWS, Azure or GCP experience welcomed)
- Modern CI/CD tooling
We're Looking For
- 7+ years working in software development with a strong backend focus, ideally in Python.
- Experience designing and scaling distributed systems and production APIs.
- Strong understanding of cloud architecture, containerisation and modern engineering practices.
- Previous technical leadership experience, including mentoring and managing engineers.
- Ability to balance technical excellence with product and business objectives.
- Strong stakeholder management experience
- Comfortable influencing architecture and engineering direction across multiple teams.
