Headquartered in Philadelphia, PA, NBME prides itself on a dynamic work environment that values talent, diversity, and a shared commitment to improving healthcare outcomes worldwide. About The Role NBME is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Frontend Prototype Developer to join our team remotely. In this pivotal role, you will support the development of early-stage prototypes and experimental tools used in assessment research. You will work closely with NBME’s Construct and Research teams to design, build, and refine rapid prototypes that explore new assessment formats and user interactions. This position offers an exciting opportunity to independently develop functional research tools using a variety of technologies, including Shiny, low-code/no-code platforms, and modern front-end frameworks such as Angular and AWS. The successful candidate will also collaborate with product engineering teams to adapt and extend existing production systems for efficacy studies, ensuring a seamless transition from research prototypes to scalable, production-ready solutions. This role is primarily remote, offering flexibility to work from home or a hybrid setup, with consideration given to candidates within 50 miles of Philadelphia, PA. It is an ideal position for self-motivated engineers who enjoy problem-solving, rapid iteration, and working at the intersection of research, innovation, and technology development. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of 8+ years of professional software development experience across the full SDLC.
  • Proficiency in front-end development frameworks and languages, including Angular (2+), TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as Shiny, low-code/no-code platforms, and AI-assisted development tools.
  • Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, system design, and software architecture principles.
  • Experience with AWS services such as Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SQL, Node.js, and CDK is a plus.
  • Familiarity with source control systems and UI/UX design principles.
  • Experience building prototypes, experimental interfaces, or research-oriented software is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of R programming language is advantageous.
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and stay current with emerging trends in prototyping and software development.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with research teams to understand study objectives, gather requirements, and design functional prototypes that support assessment innovation.
  • Develop rapid prototypes independently using tools such as Shiny, survey platforms, low/no-code environments, and modern front-end frameworks.
  • Modify and extend existing production systems built on Angular and AWS to support efficacy studies, experimental groupings, and customized research conditions.
  • Conduct testing, validation, and iterative improvements to ensure prototypes meet research goals and usability standards.
  • Contribute to product development workflows through hands-on coding, technical exploration, and quality assurance activities.
  • Evaluate emerging prototyping tools and technologies, providing recommendations aligned with research and innovation needs.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth transition from prototypes to scalable production systems.
  • Communicate progress, technical considerations, and findings effectively to research, engineering, and product stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary range of $110,560 - $149,256 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Comprehensive health insurance including medical, dental, prescription, and vision plans.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Tuition reimbursement program to support ongoing professional development.
  • Flexible work environment with options for remote, hybrid, or onsite work.
  • Paid time off and holidays to promote work-life balance.
  • Employee assistance programs and wellness resources.
  • Opportunities to contribute to impactful projects in healthcare assessment and innovation.
