The Opportunity
Surevine builds secure, scalable, collaboration solutions for the most security conscious organisations, enabling them to work together on their most highly sensitive information.
We’re looking for a Junior Software Engineer early in their career who wants to grow quickly by working on real production systems. You’ll be paired with an experienced engineer from day one, and your development will be overseen by our Head of Engineering, who’s passionate about helping people grow early in their careers.
We hire software engineers who are adaptable, curious, and committed to creating excellent engineering solutions, both independently and as part of a team. You don’t need to know everything yet; we care as much about how you learn as what you already know.
Engineering in Surevine
You’ll get hands-on experience across the software lifecycle; cloud engineering, test-driven development, AI-assisted development, experimentation, prototyping and automation. We don’t hire engineering zealots or rigid process followers. We look for adaptable people who want to learn how to weigh up the context and choose the right tools and approaches for the job.
We actively use AI tools to accelerate our development, improve code quality and solve complex problems, and we’ll support you to use them as well. Alongside that, we’ll help you to build strong engineering fundamentals: we expect you to understand, question and be able to explain any code an AI tool writes for you.
We want you to have (or be keen to learn) an understanding of how engineering decisions affect security. Most importantly, we want you to be honest about what you know and what you don’t know and to know how to work with your “don’t know”. Asking for help early is a strength here, not a weakness.
We’re a distributed company and always have been, so you'll communicate and collaborate through video calls, chat and written documentation. We value clear communication and welcome different communication styles and preferences.
We look at problems from all angles, but we don’t sit around staring at them. Sometimes the best way to learn is to build an MVP and put it in the hands of a real person.
The tools we use
We don’t expect you to know most of these. You’ll work with some of them in your first weeks and pick up others over time, with support from the team. What matters more is that you’re curious and are open-minded about using the best technology for them problem, in front of you.

What you will be doing
We recognise that engineers have different working styles and strengths. Below are the key parts of the role and we'll work with you to find approaches that play to your strengths while achieving our shared goals.
- Build and ship features in our live production systems, with design guidance from senior engineers, growing into contributing design decisions as your experience develops
- Take part in code reviews, both having your code reviewed and reviewing others’, contribute to documentation and knowledge sharing across the team
- Consider the user at every step; from understanding the need through to designing and delivering the solution
- Work alongside experienced colleagues on systems in live operation, including helping to support them when things go wrong
- Experiment with AI-powered development tools and practices, and share what you learn with the team
- Bring fresh eyes to how we work. We want your questions and ideas about how the team delivers
- Develop your skills through pairing, mentoring, structured learning and time for experimentation. We encourage trying new approaches while also valuing depth and mastery

- Some professional software development experience, typically 1-3 years (placements and internships count)
- Working knowledge of at least one language we use, such as JavaScript/TypeScript, Python or Java

- Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working in a remote team
Nice to have
- Experience with a cloud platform (AWS or GCP) and containers (Docker)
