FULL STACK SOFTWARE ENGINEER
Location: Remote | United States (East Coast preferred, especially NYC and DC)
Clearance: Not required. US citizenship required (ITAR/EAR).
Employment Type: Full-time, salaried, with full benefits
The Company & Mission:
Our client is a Series A, venture backed startup building AI software for defense, government, and regulated commercial teams working in highly sensitive environments. Their platform helps users search and review documents at scale, so mission teams can move faster without sacrificing accuracy or security. The team is small and tight knit, and early engineers help define the product, the architecture, and the culture.
What This Role is All About:
As an early full stack engineer, you will help build the core application: a user facing web platform for large scale document search and review. You will work on document processing pipelines, an agentic workflow execution system, database scaling problems, and pushing state of the art LLMs to their limits. The stack is TypeScript/React, Python/FastAPI, and Postgres.
This is a product engineering role as much as a systems role. You will craft interfaces that make complex, document centric workflows intuitive and joyful, and partner closely with users in defense, government, and regulated commercial environments. We are looking for a generalist with a diverse technical background who learns new technologies on the job and communicates complex ideas clearly to people with varying levels of technical literacy.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Optimizing search and review agents for accuracy and consistency
- Building polished, reliable user facing features in a Next.js/React application
- Designing backend APIs, data models, and workflow execution paths that support responsive frontends
- Writing high quality code within a small team that cares about maintainability and performance
- Helping design and improve the system architecture
- Working with users and teammates to define and refine product direction
- Contributing to company strategy, shaping the culture, and taking on diverse responsibilities as the company grows
What You Bring:
- US citizenship (required; this role supports work subject to US government contract obligations and export control regulations, ITAR/EAR)
- 3+ years as a professional software engineer (senior engineers welcome)
- Proficiency in Python and TypeScript/React
- Experience with LLMs and AI engineering techniques
- Experience with system design
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Strong product sense and care for usable interfaces
- A proactive mindset, with a knack for taking initiative and ownership
Bonus Points:
- Experience in defense, intelligence, national security, or other regulated operational domains
- Experience working with end users
- Familiarity with document processing pipelines
- Experience at an early stage startup
- Active or current security clearance
Benefits:
- Base salary of $160,000 to $250,000, plus meaningful equity (in accordance with New York pay transparency law, this range applies to candidates in New York state; pay elsewhere falls within this range based on local market conditions)
- Annual merit refreshes based on impact
- Full benefits
- Real impact on mission critical workflows, and the chance to define your role as the company grows
