About the Role
Come Near is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to lead the technical design and development of a personalized digital engagement platform. As part of a lean, fully distributed nonprofit, this role will focus on building and maintaining full stack features across the web platform, including user interfaces, APIs, and data layers.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Next.js and React, along with practical knowledge of AWS, caching strategies, CDN configurations, and automated testing. This position requires someone who can work independently, collaborate with distributed team members and external engineering vendors, and deliver reliable software for high-traffic events and media campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and deliver full stack features across the web platform, covering user interfaces, APIs, and data layers.
- Develop production code using Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui while following established architecture and technical standards.
- Implement and maintain caching, CDN, and edge configurations using Cloudflare, Vercel, or comparable platforms.
- Work within the AWS environment to deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot services.
- Integrate with data and personalization pipelines while handling personal and sensitive user information according to established privacy and security practices.
- Participate in code reviews and provide or receive feedback on code quality, performance, and maintainability.
- Collaborate with vendor engineering teams working on shared codebases, following established integration contracts and API patterns.
- Coordinate project handoffs and status updates with distributed team members and vendor engineers across time zones.
- Maintain async-first documentation to support remote collaboration.
- Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
- Troubleshoot production issues, including performance and reliability problems during high-traffic events.
- Document completed work through pull requests, runbooks, and contributions to team design documents.
Required Qualifications
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience building full stack web applications.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong hands-on experience with Next.js and React.
- Working knowledge of Tailwind CSS and component libraries such as shadcn/ui.
- Practical experience with caching strategies, CDN configuration, and edge platforms such as Cloudflare, Vercel, or comparable technologies.
- Working knowledge of AWS services relevant to modern web applications, including S3, Lambda, RDS, and CloudFront.
- Experience writing and maintaining automated tests, including unit, integration, and/or end-to-end tests.
- Comfort working in shared codebases, reviewing other engineers' code, and receiving feedback on your own work.
- Ability to work independently, communicate clearly, manage priorities, and deliver tasks in a distributed team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with external agencies or vendor engineering teams.
- Exposure to analytics or event-tracking pipelines.
- Familiarity with AI/ML-powered product features from an integration or consumption standpoint, rather than model development.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or similar technologies.
