About the role

About the Company

Come Near is a fully distributed nonprofit organization focused on raising the public conversation about Jesus. The organization creates, curates, and connects people with authentic stories and experiences of Jesus. Its best-known initiative is the “He Gets Us” campaign, launched in 2021 to invite people to reconsider Jesus and reaching millions of Americans.

About the Role

Come Near is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer to lead the technical design and development of its highest-priority initiative: a personalized digital engagement platform. This role involves building and maintaining full stack features across the web platform, from user interfaces and APIs to data layers and infrastructure. The engineer will work with internal team members and external vendor engineers in a fully distributed, async-first environment to deliver reliable software that supports high-traffic events and major media moments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and deliver full stack features across the web platform, covering user interfaces, APIs, and data layers.
  • Write production code using Next.js, React, Tailwind CSS, and shadcn/ui while following established architecture and technical standards.
  • Implement and maintain caching, CDN, and edge configurations using Cloudflare, Vercel, or comparable platforms.
  • Deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot services within the AWS environment.
  • Integrate with data and personalization pipelines while handling personal and sensitive user data in accordance with established privacy and security practices.
  • Participate in code reviews and provide and receive feedback on code quality, performance, and maintainability.
  • Collaborate with vendor engineering teams on shared codebases, following established integration contracts and API patterns.
  • Coordinate project handoffs and status updates with distributed team members and vendor engineers across time zones through clear, asynchronous documentation.
  • Write and maintain unit, integration, and end-to-end tests.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, including performance and reliability challenges during high-traffic events.
  • Document development work through pull requests, runbooks, and contributions to team design documents.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of professional software engineering experience building full stack web applications.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Next.js and React.
  • Working knowledge of Tailwind CSS and component libraries such as shadcn/ui.
  • Practical experience with caching strategies, CDN configuration, and edge platforms such as Cloudflare, Vercel, or comparable technologies.
  • Working knowledge of AWS services used in modern web applications, such as S3, Lambda, RDS, and CloudFront.
  • Experience writing and maintaining automated tests, including unit, integration, and/or end-to-end tests.
  • Experience working in shared codebases, reviewing other engineers’ code, and receiving feedback on your own work.
  • Strong full stack fundamentals, with the ability to work across frontend, API, and infrastructure concerns.
  • Ability to take ownership of scoped tasks and deliver them with minimal supervision in a remote environment.
  • Clear written and technical communication skills, including the ability to explain implementation decisions and outstanding work.
  • Ability to follow architectural direction and established technical standards while making sound day-to-day implementation decisions.
  • A pragmatic approach to development, with a focus on delivering working software, identifying risks early, and avoiding unnecessary complexity.
  • Willingness to receive feedback and learn from others.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with external agencies or vendor engineering teams.
  • Exposure to analytics or event-tracking pipelines.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML-powered product features from an integration or consumption perspective, rather than model development.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.

Personal Attributes

  • A personal relationship with Jesus and a passion for Come Near’s mission.
  • A service-oriented mindset, humility, and collaborative leadership.
  • An initiative-taking and detail-oriented approach to planning and execution.

Mission Alignment

Candidates are required to sign the organization’s Statement of Faith, which closely aligns with Come Near’s mission of inviting all people one step closer to the authentic Jesus, wherever they are.
